U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a final rule that will increase the filing fees for applications and benefits in almost every category of immigration to the U.S. Adjustment of status cases will see fees increase from $1760.00 to over $3640.00. The cost to bring a spouse and two children could exceed $10,000.00 under this new proposal.
Other immigration applications are also set to increase in price: the fiancé visa petition will increase by 35%, from $535 to $720, the petition for a relative will increase by 53% from $535 to $820, and the removal of conditions application will increase by 76%, from $680 to $1,195.
USCIS is almost entirely funded by the fees paid by applicants and petitioners for immigration benefits. The law requires USCIS to periodically review the fees and they claim that COVID caused a decrease in the number of applications filed which lead to a funding shortfall. If all goes as planned the new fees could be in place by May of 2023.
